9. As the evening comes

Consider lighting. I love lanterns and stringing trees and bushes with twinkle lights in the dark areas……tea lights also make a pretty addition.

10. Decorations

I love Fabric bunting. and summer flowers. For Centerpieces consider fruit bowls for a splash of bright colour and if you are creative carve something nice.

11. Don’t forget the music

Some feel good tunes and uplifting music will liven up your guests. Right now I’ve got Katy Perry’s – California Girls playing in my head.

12. Have a good time

Africa, Oh Africa!

I am an African, living in Africa. I am not your usual African. Not the kind one thinks of when one thinks of Somalia. No, I am a white African.

You see, I was born in Africa. And I will most probably die in Africa. Africa is in my blood. The sights, the sounds, the smells. The long dusty roads, the corruption, the roar of the lions at a kill at night. The dusty shanty towns with half-clothed swollen-bellied children. And the long grass on the plains, dotted here and there by an umbrella acacia thorn tree. This is what I know. This is the picture in my mind when I close my eyes at night.

Why, then does everyone call us Europeans? We are not from Europe. In generations past, yes. But no longer! I am African! Bred here, to die here! When I’m away, I do not long for the British countryside, or the fjords of Norway. Nor do I long for the flatlands of Holland, or the mountains of the Swiss. No, I long for the vast open plains of the dry Karoo and wild animals that I have come to know as the African that I am! I long to see the wild antelope, like the Springbuck. I crave to see the deadly Mamba and the alligator too. These I know. These I love.

Africa has never been tamed. True, there are huge cities, but the wildness is still there. And the abundance of military hardware, long since discarded by the West, is living proof of this wildness. The police officer clinging onto his AK47 keeps telling us that this is a wild place. But this is a place of adventure, of new tomorrows, which follow stunning red sunsets.

I find it strange when they talk of an ‘African American’. How can that be? How can you be from two places? Your heart only has one home. What do they think of when they close their eyes at night? Is it of the dusty plains, the screeching jungle with a million mosquitoes, or is it of Houston, or New York City? That’s what you really are. It’s not about the colour of your skin. No Brother, its where your heart is. That’s who you are! Where you really want to be when you close your eyes!

Africa is the place of opportunity. It has few limits. Danger lurks everywhere, but so does opportunity. As the antelope bound over the plains, so can your imagination roam free in Africa. It’s not an easy place. The pictures you see of Somalia are proof of this. There’s very little to lean back on. Life is tough. Droughts come and droughts go. Good times and bad times. Seasons of plenty, and seasons of famine. But there’s always opportunity! Forever knocking!

Oh Africa, blessed Africa. How I love this rugged place.
